Site Setup dialog

This dialog appears if you do the following:

Note - Selecting the Site Setup command not only opens a dialog, but also induces Trimble 4D Control Server to connect to the total station instrument for which this module is set up. If it fails to connect, a warning appears, but the dialog opens nevertheless. Closing the dialog additionally disconnects the Trimble 4D Control Server system from that total station. Opening the dialog while a round is measured stops the scheduler and aborts the round measurement. In the latter case, a warning appears.

Use the Site Setup dialog to steer the connected total station instrument, to specify the station setup mode and required control points, and to perform reference measurements with specified settings.

Configure Point List group

Use the settings of this group to view and specify the target points to be measured in a reference measurement. For each point, shortcut menu commands let you perform actions on them.

The list displays the Target Name of the target points in the order as they have been added to the list and/or sorted using the arrow button. Put the focus onto a target name to activate this target for the reference measurement. A check box left of the target name gives the current status of the target point:

No reference measurement available yet.

Reference measurement successfully performed; raw measurement data in three directions are available in both faces.

The buttons within this group let you add and remove points to / from the list of points, temporarily disable a point, and specify the sequence in which the enabled points are measured in the round.

Add Points button

Opens a Point Information dialog, displaying a pre-selection of those points which have been already defined for the selected mission. Here you can select one or several points (multiple selection is possible) or first add a new point to the list, defining its properties on the right side of that dialog. There is no limitation to the number of selected points.

Add Groups button

Opens a Select Target Groups dialog, displaying all specified point groups of the mission. Here you can select groups of points and thus add all the points assigned to a selected group to the list of points to be measured. There is no limitation to the number of selected points.

Remove button

Deletes the currently selected point from the list, if you do not need it anymore.

Import button

Opens a Point Import dialog, an enhanced folder browser and file selection dialog. Here you can select a CSV file containing point position data and specify the default properties of the import points. There is no limitation to the number of selected points.

Disable button

Temporarily disables the selected point(s), that is excludes it from the list of points to be measured in the rounds to come. Multiple selection using the Shift key is possible. In the list, disabled points are grayed out. Disabled points remain part of the point list of the site and keep their reference values. They will neither be processed nor respected for alarming, even if measurements are available.

Enable button

Enables the selected, disabled point(s) for being measured in a round. Multiple selection using the Shift key is possible.

Arrow buttons

Use the arrow-up and arrow-down buttons to move the selected point to the preferred position in the sequence. You can only move one item at a time to a new location.

Turn to target shortcut menu command

The Turn to target shortcut menu command is available for all target points in the list. Use it to automatically aim the total station instrument near to the selected target.

The following is required for successfully turning to the target:

Or

The Turn to target feature can be used in place of the controls of the Instrument Control group. It is especially helpful, if you do not see the total station instrument during the site setup, for example, because the computer running the Trimble 4D Control Server UI is at a different location or because the instrument is difficult to access.

Selection shortcut menu command

The Selection shortcut menu command is available for all target points in the list. Use it to select multiple points. The following options are available:

If multiple targets are selected, the site setup tries to measure all this targets as soon as you have clicked Measure.

Tip - For the final search of the target prism use the Search button, then click Measure to start measuring the target.

Reference Measurement group

Before starting a reference measurement, enter the following properties of the instrument and target point. They are used for correcting the target information.

Target height: Specifies the height of the target prism above ground point. Initial value: Unknown

Prism constant: Specifies the prism constant of the target prism, that is a correction to the measured slope distance. The correction is necessary because the prism reflector surface is not directly above the survey point being measured. Typically, the constant is a negative value. Initial value: Unknown

Measuring

Clicking the Measure button starts the reference measurement for the selected target point(s) in both faces, 1 and 2. If more than one target is selected the site setup tries to measure all selected targets automatically.

Depending on the distance to the selected target and on the model of your total station, the search for the target is automatically done in the total station's Long Range FineLock™ mode (for longer distances, depending on the availability of the Long Range FineLock mode at the total station), or in its Finelock™ mode, or in its Autolock™ mode (for short distances). The dialog status bar always displays the current locking mode.

If you repeat a reference measurement, previous target information is overwritten with the newly measured values, if you accept the respective message.

Tip - If you change the total station instrument after you have previously successfully measured a target which has been measured in the Long Range FineLock mode, it may happen that the measurement cannot be repeated, if the new instrument does not support this mode and if the target is too far away for the FineLock mode.

Target information

The text boxes of the Reference Measurement group are filled with information on the site setup during the reference measurement. Measured values are the following, both in face 1 and face 2:

EDM distance: Distance of the prism from the Electronic Distance Measurement device. In the selected length unit.

Hz circle reading: The horizontal angle between reference circle 0 and pointing direction. In degrees.

V angle: The vertical angle between total station and prism. In degrees.

Station Setup group

Use the drop-down button of the Mode field to select a method of station setup, one of the following:

Tip - If you perform a resection, make sure the grid coordinates of the total station point are set to Unknown. Only unknown coordinates of monitored points are re-computed.

Instrument height: Specifies the height of the total station above ground. Initial value: 0.000

Selecting backsight points as reference

Depending on the selected method of station setup one, two, or more backsight points must be specified. They must provide control coordinates in a local grid system. The Backsights field displays the names of the selected target points with control coordinates. To add or edit target points, click the browse button. The Point Information dialog appears displaying a pre-selection of those points which have already been defined for the selected total station site. To select a point, set the focus on its name and click OK. Make sure the selected point has control coordinates.

Tip - For the Station Setup and the Station Setup Plus modes, the total station point must provide control coordinates.

Instrument Control group

Use the controls of this group to directly steer the connected total station instrument. For detailed information on the total station functions, refer to its user guide.

Arrow buttons

Use the arrow buttons in up, down, left, right, and the four diagonal directions to steer the instrument tracker near to the prism to be measured next. The arrow buttons are only active, if the speed is not set to zero.

Speed scale

Move the slider to relatively increase or decrease the velocity of total station tracker movements. If the slider is at the left of the scale, the speed equals zero.

Search button

Button TS Search

Performs a search of a prism in a wide search window using the Search total station mode.

Autolock toggle button

Enables or disables the automatic target aiming and locking mode at the total station, such as the Trimble Autolock™ mode.

Laser toggle button

Enables or disables the laser pointer at the total station.

Video Control toggle button

Only available for total stations with in-built video camera. Enables or disables the video camera at the total station for sending images. A control dialog appears that displays those images and lets you specify the quality in ten steps (the higher the quality, the larger the image size) and the video zoom in three steps. When you close the video dialog, the video camera stops sending data.

Status bar

At the left, the status bar displays status information, such as the connection status to the total station, which is represented by its serial number, battery status, or command failures. At the right, the current horizontal circle reading and vertical angle values of the total station tracker are shown.
