Starting the installation of software updates
If new software update files are available on a computer, the installation process is started the next time when you (re-)start a service or application using the Trimble Service Administrator software.
Note - For avoiding the interruption of a running system as well as incompatibilities, the installation of the software updates does not start automatically as soon as the updates are available. You can wait for a convenient time for shutting down the system and starting the installation process.
The software update has to be installed individually on each computer participating in the Trimble 4D Control Server system. During installation, the software services and applications must not run. If there is an update for the Trimble 4D Control Server UI, it must also have been closed.
The main steps of the software update
The following are the main steps how to update the software once the update files are distributed to all computers in the Trimble 4D Control Server system.
- (Re-)start at least one of the Trimble 4D Control Server applications and services on a computer participating in the distributed system.
- The Trimble Service Administrator software checks whether all Trimble 4D Control Server applications and services on that computer are stopped.
- If processes are still running, a message appears. To proceed with the update, you must shut down all Trimble 4D Control Server applications and services.
- If all processes are stopped, the Trimble Service Administrator software starts installing the update files for this computer.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 until all computers participating in the Trimble 4D Control Server system are using the same version.
Step 1: How does one start the software update?
While it is necessary and possible to install updates on each computer individually, the Trimble 4D Control Server software needs to run the same version on each participating computer. Therefore, Trimble recommends that you actively stop running processes at all participating computers at a convenient time.
- Before starting the update, it may be a good idea to check, whether all computers in the system have received the new update files. If a Controller or DBServer computer was not connected to the system at the time of the download, it will not have received the update files. In this case, copy the update files to that computers <installation folder>\Updates folder.
- Use the Trimble Service Administrator software to actively (stop and re-) start all Trimble 4D Control Server services and applications. To do so, you can use both, the main dialog of the Trimble Service Administrator UI or the shortcut menu commands of its system tray icon.
Step 2: How is the update performed?
- As soon as one service or application (re-)starts at a computer, the Trimble Service Administrator software will check the local \Updates folder for new software versions.
- If it finds a newer version, the Trimble Service Administrator software will check whether all Trimble 4D Control Server services and applications are stopped on that computer, too.
- One of the following happens:
- If there are processes still running, a message appears. To proceed with the update, shut down all Trimble 4D Control Server applications and services running on the local computer. Re-start the processes using the Trimble Service Administrator's Start command.
- If all processes are stopped, the Trimble Service Administrator software starts installing the update files on this computer.
- When all processes are stopped, the Trimble Service Administrator software does the following:
- It replaces the files which should be updated with the matching files extracted from the update file.
- The replaced files are copied into the \Backup folder.
- If an update can not be performed, the update process performs a roll back to the previous version.
- The update process creates a log file in the installation folder.
- If the update process includes an update to the DBServer, a DBUpdate process will be invoked.
- When the update process has been finished for that computer, the status bar icon will indicate that the software is up-to-date.
Step 3: Repeating the update process for all computers in the system
It is necessary to repeat steps 1 and 2 until all computers participating in the Trimble 4D Control Server system are using the same version before you restart the system.
