Updating the Trimble receiver firmware

Modern Trimble receivers support their firmware being updated using remote access from external software, such as Trimble 4D Control Server using the receiver's web UI. The Device Manager module can be used to remotely upload the files with new firmware versions to these receivers. Thus, you can make sure that all receivers of the net are updated concurrently.

For performing a firmware update for one or multiple Trimble receiver(s) in one step do the following:

  1. Make sure the addresses and credentials of the receiver(s) are known using the GNSS Receiver module's Receiver Control, Remote Access sub-category of properties.

The properties are accessible, for example, by selecting the GNSS Receiver module in the list displayed at the Device Manager module's Firmware Update view and then selecting its shortcut menu command Device Properties.

  2. At the Device Manager module's Firmware Update view the Select a firmware browse button on top this view and use the file selection dialog to select a firmware file.
  3. Use the table of the Firmware Update view to select the receiver(s) to be updated. Multiple selection is supported.
  4. Make sure that the firmware file matches the types of the selected receiver(s).
  5. Click the Firmware Update button.
The Updating receiver firmware <version> dialog appears. It displays the receiver(s) - identified by their station code - that are currently updated and those that are waiting in the queue.

A given number of receivers are updated in parallel, all other receiver are waiting in a queue. As soon as one update is done, the next receiver is dequeued and pushed to firmware update.

Warning - Do not close the Trimble 4D Control Server UI until the Updating receiver firmware <version> dialog has disappeared.

If you need to stop all receivers waiting in the queue, click the Stop Receivers in Queue button. The update processes of the receivers which are currently being updated cannot be stopped.

  6. The Device Manager Firmware Update view lets you observe the status of the current update(s) in its Update Status fields. When the upload and update has finished, the Updating receiver firmware <version> dialog disappears.

Tip - If a connection to a module is not available due to, for example, a failure of the transmitting media, the receiver will be identified as Not available.

  7. Consider some more minutes until the receiver has rebooted and is fully operational again.
